Back to School -- Foster Training 101

Ahem:  Class is now in session.  Let me call roll.  Cotton, Molly, Puddles, Puddles...ANYONE?!?  PUDDLES!?!, Frankie, Ernie, Milo, Dixie, Newby, Casey, Zim, Dave, Madi, Teddy, Dougall, Chip, Tasha, Anna Rose, Mona, Weenie....any stragglers who didn't enroll in time?

A good teacher always leads by example.  In each of the following demonstrations I have for you, the most important thing to remember is that if you lead, they will follow.  God it?

Section I.  Wrestling
The best way to teach a foster to wrestle is just to pounce and pounce them until they finally wrestle.

Once they finally engage in play, it's time to demonstrate correct posture.  Keep your tail up so they know it's just play and you're not actually mad.

Now, remember to let them win the first few times so they learn to like wrestling.  After that, winning is your MAIN GOAL!
 Section II:  Pests

Obviously, the most important job for any human companion is to keep pests away from the humans.  Even if they are nasty sankes, you need to show NO FEAR.

Section III:  Helping Around the House

A good dog helps with everything from sewing to making the bed.  You need to show your foster that they should be in the middle of all the action no matter what is happening.

 Section IV:  Digging

When you start your hole, dig with all your might and show your foster how much fun it is to dig!

Once they've experience the joy, stand back and give them pointers.  If they master it, your job is done and you can go onto another task.
Section V:  Becoming the Master

Obviously, the most important job of any pup or cat is to BE THE MASTER.  This means to get as high as possible and be really really tall.  See how Everest learned how to walk around the patio so he was tall like a human?

That's how it's done pups and cats.

When training your own foster, please feel free to add any other tasks you deem important.  Obviously, it is impossible to detail all of the very important tasks we do in just one lesson.  It is a major if not a PhD topic.

Good luck to you all,

Nora B. Webster

  7. Thank you, this was a wonderful class! I think that the most important part of training a foster is to lead the way on everything so they can see there's nothing to be skeered of.

  8. Oh, yeah! This was a great class! It's funny ... Dave was the foster, but he taught ME a lot of those lessons. Especially about wrestling. I didn't know how to play until he got here. And that "high ground" thing?!!? He stole bananas off the TOP of the magic cold box!!!! Ha roo roo roo!!! Oh, that was a good one.
Of course, he was so good at all of it that he moved in permanent-like. You know. Sort of like how things are looking with you and Blaze. :)

  11. Nora! I had not a clue you were a snake wrangler. Want to come visit Kentucky for a bit? We have some gardening snakes that didn't do a lick of gardening all summer long. We'd like to evict them

  12. Great lesson. We're not allowed near snakes because they're almost always poisonous here.

We've never had a foster here, but Roxy, our sister WAS a foster, and boy, she must have had a teacher like you! She really tries to take over.

  18. I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve got hit the nail on the head. Your idea is excellent; the problem is something that not sufficient people are speaking intelligently about. I’m very comfortable that I stumbled across this in my seek for one thing referring to this.
